Going Solo

It’s pretty funny how these obsessed One Direction fans or Kpop boyband fans are. They think that these boybands will stick it out together – FOREVER. But of course they won’t and worst of all one of them might turn out to be having the hots for their (boy)band members. KIDDING, Seriously, that was a joke.

Anyway, we’ve seen a lot of bands or any music groups for that matter that broke up and one of them ending up a great solo act.

Remember Sonny Moore? Yeah, that guy who fronted metalcore band From First To Last? He’s a dj now. A dj with a $15M net worth.  In case you’re curious, he goes by the name Skrillex.

There are things like these that happen in Manila music scene. Like Julie Anne San Jose, being a part of Pop Star Kids performing every Sunday in a noontime show. Everyone in this group went hiatus but Julie Anne has skyrocketed to the top when she went solo.

Gloc 9. Oh yes. He was a part of a rap group called Death Threat. He went solo and literally delivered his mixtape in every single record company here in the Philippines. Well, that didn’t get him a record deal but you know what did? His affiliation from the one and only Francis M. And now, this humble man is the best Filipino mainstream hiphop act out there.

Often times a lot think that if an artist got successful as part of a music group, he will fail as a solo act because it will always be assumed that the reason he had to leave the group or the group broke up was because he wants to go solo. Voila, everyone hates the guy as if he’s freaking Yoko Ono that broke up The Beatles.

Take Ely Buendia, everyone loved him when was in Eraserheads but when he went solo it didn’t go well (in terms of sales). But, he established The Mongols and Pupil and the guy is back in his OPM superhero stature.

Champ Lui Pio of the late great Hale. He was mentally dated by a million college girls in circa 2005. But then he went solo and he has not yet made any hit songs since then.

Ebe Dancel of Sugarfree. Well this guy is a great singer and songwriter and he has a mild hit song in the form of “Muli” but has not yet produced a classic like the ones he made with Sugarfree such as “Hari ng Sablay”.

Is it the end for these guys? No. We as people, sometimes are afraid of changes. We don’t like endings especially sad ones. But we need to accept that people grow. And that there are times that when people grow, they need to fly solo. Having hit songs are the goals of people who want to earn from their talent. But being able to express yourself fully with no limit is the true fulfilment of a real artist.
